Christmas Day Revisited

Here are some pictures from Christmas Eve (the Gingerbread house that Joey and Bibs built with a little help from Carolyn) and then from Christmas Day (Joey frying the turkey. Dad and Joey building Dad and Sally's new fire pit). The best thing about these pictures is that Bibianna took all of them. She takes great pics. I like this blurry off-center one. Two of the blogs I follow, tangobaby and willowmanor posted "happy accidents" this week which consisted of photos that don't look like photos are supposed to look, but are way cool. So this is a happy accident from Bibianna.

Resolve

Because I am OCD (obsessive compulsive disordered) I make my new years resolutions throughout the year so that I have them firmly in place by Jan 1. This year, I made them in November, which is a little late for me, but nevertheless they are firmly in place. However, I have been reading on blogs about other peoples resolutions and have decided to make some more.

1. Never clean up the kitchen again.

Now, I told my perfect husband this resolution yesterday and he said, "I completely understand and support that resolution. I don't like cleaning the kitchen either and most of the time the squalor doesn't seem to bother anyone else but you, so Good Job!" Then I told my real husband, because my perfect husband left when I woke up, and he said "then we will have to eat out all the time and that gets very expensive." So this brings me to resolution number two.

2.

I haven't yet figured out what number two is going to be, but I am working on something that involves more money, or a housekeeper maybe even housekeeper/cook, or a new husband, or some combination of the three.

To blog or not to blog

Bibianna asked me this past week why I am suddenly so interested in blogging. I told her that it is a good way to share our lives with family and friends who don't have the pleasure of living close by. It is also a good record for us to look back on to see what all was going on 6 months ago, a year ago, who knows.

Well, as I mentioned yesterday, Bibianna is staying at my mom's house for a few days and she spent some time yesterday going through my grandmother's scrapbook from when she was a teenager through maybe early 20s. It is so cool to go back and see what was going on in my grandmother's life and in the world during that time and also to see what her interests were. Bibianna told me that she read several articles about the first set of living quadruplets! Can you imagine that being a first. Now with all the fertility treatments quadruplets seem almost as "normal" as twins. My grandmother also had several articles about a murder/kidnapping that took place in the 30s (I think). It happened in the same small town where my grandparents grew up. When I read those articles, years ago, without the invent of CNN and all the docudrama movies that make these chilling events seem "common," I was just so entranced by the fact that something that horrible could happen in a place that seems so safe. It still amazes me.

So, this is going to be my scrapbook. I am going to continue to write for the sake of keeping family posted and because it is fun and a little cathartic for me, and because hopefully it will be an ongoing record that my grandchildren may be able to look back on in future years and marvel at how much things change and how much they stay the same.

No movies today....Carolyn and I have been loyally dedicated to the House marathon on the USA network. (It is Carolyn's favorite show). I actually have been watching and sleeping. Since being on call is kind of like having a new born baby and I never really get to sleep more than about two hours with out my baby crying (pager ringing) I have just enjoyed laying on the couch and napping and responding to pages and watching House with Carolyn. Not a bad Sunday.

The Leftovers

Well, I am feeling a little bit better today. Bibianna left today to go spend a few days at my mom's house. There is such a stillness that settles over the house when she is gone. I hate having her gone but love the fact that she has the opportunity to spend some good quality time with her grandmother. I know that the memories of staying with my grandparents are some of my fondest childhood recollections. I also like having some good quality time for Carolyn and I. Those moments of good one-on-one time without the distractions of everyday life are few and far between.

On Christmas day, my dad and step-mother came for dinner. Joey deep fried a turkey in the backyard (I will post pictures later after I get time to download them). I baked a ham, two versions of cornbread dressing (vegetarian and non-vegetarian), sweet potatoes, broccoli/chesse casserole, green bean casserole and I even made two pies that weren't half bad. I have been eating, and eating, and eating since Christmas day. I love leftovers: therefore, I hate leftovers. I honestly think that the food just gets better everyday. Fortunately, we are starting to see the bottom of the dishes so that is good. As soon as it is all gone, it is back to healthy eating (which implies that we were eating healthily before the holiday season...HAH!) again. Maybe I will make that one of my New Years Resolutions......

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention movies yesterday. We watched "The House Bunny" and "The Dark Knight." Tonight our viewing choices are "The Happening" and "Mama Mia."

Bah Humbug!

Bah Humbug! I hate having to go on-call the day after Christmas. I am so spoiled by the last few days of bliss that today has just given me a headache. I know, I know, I should see the glass as half full (yes, I had the luxury of taking a whole week off from work) rather than half empty (ppffllttt!) but I am having a hard time doing that today. My kitchen still looks like a mini-tornado blew through. What I can't figure out is where all these dishes came from and where to put them now that I am finished with them. I know that they were "somewhere" before I got them out over the past week, but where? All my storage spaces are full and I just don't know how I had them all stashed away. Must be some type of Christmas phenomenon, kind of like the phenomenon where socks disappear in the dryer, or why you can never fold a map back up like it was when you first opened it. Anyway, it could be a lot worse than it is, but UGH.....hate the end of the holiday.

Christmas Eve Gift

We have a tradition in our family for Christmas Eve. If you say the words "Christmas Eve Gift" to someone first, then they are required to give you a gift on Christmas Eve. Once you Christmas Eve Gift someone, then you are safe from being Christmas Eve gifted back. I am not sure how this tradition started or why but it has been a source of fun and games to "outwit, outplay, and outlast" the other family members throughout the years. I can remember before caller ID answering the phone everytime it rang with "CHIRSTMAS EVE GIFT!" to someone's complete surprise and bewilderment. But eventually, after explaining the tradtion several times, one of my parents would unwittingly call and before they could get the words out, I would have them cornered. Another gift! HA!!!

So, this morning at 6:00 a.m., Bibianna with some covert help from her father, Christmas Eve Gifted me before I was even completely conscious. Carolyn, on the other hand, had to be coached to get out of bed and come see her Christmas Eve gift! Bibianna got a Wonka Gingerbread House kit so that she and her father can revive another tradtion that we haven't done in about 3 years. We used to bake all our own gingerbread and Joey would spend hours on just the right design, but as adulthood and careers have consumed more of our free time and energy, I thought that a pre-made, ready to assemble kit would do the trick. Joey still spent some time on ideas to "modify" the kit and he and Bibianna went to the store bright and early to purchase more candy. They also made their own fondant for the roof to make it look like a snow covered cottage.

Carolyn, my vegetarian child that lives on smoothies and milkshakes, received a wave station for her Christmas Eve gift. No more ice chunks, the box promises, and the decanter has a cool spicket at the bottom perfect for dispensing those frozen concoctions.

Bibianna also got in on the action, (although technically, according the rules, she is safe because she Christmas Eve Gifted all of us first), and gave Carolyn and I christmas PJ pants. YAY!!!

So, movies yesterday and Monday were "Fred Claus" and "Horton Hears a Who." Not sure yet quite what is on tap for tonight, other than midnight mass at 11:00 p.m. (?) but I am enjoying the lineup that has been playing on Turner Classic Movies.

Day of the Longest Night

Today is the day of winter solstice which means that for me, today is the shortest day and the longest night. It is the beginning of the days getting longer again, which always, for whatever reason, seems to lift my spirits.

Today was spent making a new batch of fudge, which thank goodness, turned out beautifully. I haven't made candy in about 3 years and I now have a new home, new stove, and was a little disappointed yesterday when I ruined my first batch. But, I always remember an interview once with Julia Child, who said that she had to make Creme Brulee many times before she was able to get it right. She said something along the lines of ....it is just eggs, and cream and butter, so what is the harm of ruining a batch and throwing it out. So, I threw out the old batch of fudge (or fudge attempt) from yesterday and forged ahead today with great results. We also made some fantastic, and easy, magic cookie bars.

Today's movies are:

Step Brothers (stupid, but has given us some great jokes for today)
The X-Files (the newest one)
The Bucket List

Today's photos are actually from yesterday, but the battery on my camera was dead, so I will just have to take some more tomorrow.

Let the Candy Making Begin

I woke up this morning when my alarm went off at 6:21 a.m. Normally, I am a snoozer. The mere thought of having to actually lift my head up or get out of bed is unbearable. In fact, I can barely manage the little bit of effort it takes to just hit the snooze button, every 9 minutes, repeatedly. However, this morning, alarm goes off at 6:21 because I forgot to turn it off last night, and I am up and moving in less than 30 seconds. It is amazing what the prospect of seven days of pure enjoyment can do to a tired soul.

So, I got up and had to wait for Bibianna to get up because I promised, PROMISED, that I wouldn't start making candy without her. Although she didn't share my initial enthusiasm of embracing the day before the sun rises, she was a new person after a nice cappuccino. Today, we made fudge (which I ruined) and a batch of divinity that was just divine. I also took about a 30 minute nap with the two dogs cuddled up with me on the comfy couch. Is there anything better than this? I don't think so.

Writer's Block

OK, I decided a few weeks ago that I was going to revisit this whole blog thing and I was going to blog something everyday, no matter how trivial. Whew! It is harder than I thought. Even if I did have something quite profound to say, I am just not sure that I have enough time to write it all down. OK, so I have enough time, it's just that blogging doesn't take a higher priority than some of my other interests....like family, sleep, etc. I have been finding some of the coolest blog sites through the "Blogs of Note." I am so impressed by the interesting insights and beautiful photographs that I have stumbled upon. Makes my humble little show and tell blog seem mundane. Mundane, maybe, but that is my life and I love it!

Anyway, my Christmas holiday officially began today at 4:00 p.m. (Except for the fact that I just spent about 30 minutes finishing up some things that I didn't have time to finish during my 8 hours today. Does that make me a workaholic, or just really inefficient?) So, now, I am on my way to a most festive and enjoyable holiday. The next few days will be filled with baking, and candy making, and last minute shopping, and watching movies. The girls are finished with school until the first week of January, the dogs are freshly groomed and all the grocery shopping has been completed. I will try to get back to my original schedule of posting everyday, and throw in some pics for good measure.

Figuratively speaking

One of my favorite things in life is the Bob Edwards radio program which I can listen to in the mornings on XM radio while I am depositing children at schools and drinking my coffee. Bob Edwards can be heard on XM 133, XMPR (which bothers me, because if it is public radio then why am I paying of it? Or is is free with my subscription to XM? But if so, then why don't they have the PR radiothons every 3 months asking for my money to continue to provide top quality radio broadcasts?) Anyway, back to the subject, last week Bob Edwards was interviewing Roy Blount, Jr. discussing Mr. Blount's book "Alphabet Juice." If you love words for the sake of words, then you will love this book and I highly recommend that you go to the Bob Edwards page and download the pod cast.

As I was listening to this interview, and thoroughly enjoyed it, I realize just how much I, like many other people, butcher the English language. (Especially when I have a deluxe headache). One of my pet peeves is the word "literally." It is used so much now when the word "figuratively" should be used, that the word is losing its meaning. Even though I may not be an expert on words, I do love them and how they are used. I also love the fact that language is constantly changing like a living organism.

One of the joys of my jobs is word watching. For instance, several of the hospitals that we support use the company "Precyse" for their transcription services. I find that amusing that a company who markets their skills for accurate transcription services is misspelled. I am sure it is a clever marketing technique, but I still find it amusing. Or, how about the hospital named Dedman (pronounced Dead-man), seems like a bad name for a hospital. Or Dr. Mallis (malice), yikes! I just love those. Anyway, check out the book and/or interview if you like words for words sake.

Christmas Madrigal Dinner

"The Madrigal Dinner is a modern invention based on several Renaissance and Medieval traditions. With each sound of the trumpet fanfare this evening, you will discover Christmas as it was celebrated in the ancient tranditions of Merrie Olde England. As you lift your glass, you will be practicing the same customs that people have enjoyed for hundrends of years in good times and in bad. As we raise our voice in a toast to the meaning of Christmas, we wish you and your family the best of the holiday season, filled with joy and beauty." -- Christmas Madrigal Dinner program

We had a splendid time tonight at the Madrigal Dinner. We dined on a scrumptious meal of chicken, rice, green beans, bread, and salad with a desert of chocolate cake (the good kind) with chocolate frosting and chocolate sauce. The wenches served us warm wassail for us to toast one and all. The music was wonderful and the following pictures, which aren't that great, are the best I could do in a dark room with an old camera. I just kept snapping and holding still until the image was captured which took anywhere from 5 - 10 seconds after I pressed the button. So, I will have better photos when Joey downloads his camera and sends them too me. Until then, enjoy.

Nothing exciting

Here are some pictures of the beginning of our Christmas decorations, and more stuff that Mopsy managed to get out the window to her spot in our backyard. I realized after I left to go pick up Carolyn from school that I left a box of wheat thin-like crackers on my desk. Unfortunately, in one picture, it looks like Honey is the culprit. That is because as soon as Mopsy saw me she ran inside to hide and poor sweet Honey thought it was so cool that I left a snack out for them. But, Mopsy isn't all bad. Wanting to be the hostess with the mostess, she also found a package of holiday cocktail napkins and took those to the back yard for the party. (I have no idea where she got those from.)

Dueling Concerts

Last night was crazy. Bibianna had her Christmas concert at 7:00 at Southland Baptist Church and Carolyn had her Christmas concert at 7:30 over at Holy Angels. Well, with getting them where they needed to be by the time they needed to be there and trying to see both of them sing was a good exercise. Anyway, I managed to see Bibianna sing one song (and Joey took pictures of her with his camera, and I will post those when he sends them to me) then I raced to Holy Angels and I saw Carolyn sing all of her songs. However, being bubble-headed as I am, I left my camera at Bibianna's concert so I had to take a picture of Carolyn with my cell phone. She is the last one on the right side of the first row. (Right in front of the girl with the blue hair. As a parent, and fairly conservative I used to think that I would just freak out if one of my children came home with blue, green, purple, etc. hair color. But this girl was very helpful last night in marking where Carolyn was. So, I guess that if I ever get a child with a non-common hair color I will just try to focus on the positive value that it makes them easier to spot in a crowd. But I digress.....) Anyway, the choirs performed beautifully. I was almost moved to tears at how beautiful such young voices can be. We are blessed with two more opportunities this week to hear them sing. Bibianna will be performing at the Madrigal Dinner on Friday and Carolyn has her winter recital on Sunday. I will try to remember my camera and get some better pictures to share. Maybe I will ask for a video camera for Christmas so that I can share their beautiful voices also.

We have also begun the process of decorating for Christmas which goes something like this. Get boxes from attic. Rest. Open boxes. Rest. Put up pre-lit artificial tree and try to get lights to work. Rest. Put some ornaments up. Rest. Now, here is where the process begins to deviate. We now have 4 furry children and only one has seen Christmas before. Ella thinks that the tree is her own personal climbing post. So, she climbs up about 2/3 of the way and perches. This of course, makes Mopsy cray so she runs around the tree and barks, until she thinks about the presents or ornaments and she grabs something and takes it out to her collection in the back yard. Morocco on the other hand is much more subtle. He quietly manages to get under the tree and start opening presents. It is fun to watch. It is also so entertaining to go into the back yard and find what all Mopsy has taken outside. Never ceases to amaze me.

And, last but not least, I would like to say THANK YOU to Belinda for becoming my second follower.

ADDENDUM: December 10, 10:25 p.m. Beautiful Bibianna from her Christmas conert last night.

Dedicated Fans

To my dedicated following, (oh yeah...uhm....Joey, that's you), I just wanted to let you know that Carolyn is refusing to log into my blog and click on the follow button, and Bibianna never gets on the computer, so I guess that makes you my fan base. The good thing is that you can be President of my fan club. Anyway, I wanted to let you know that Carolyn read the post about us being the nerdiest parents and she said, "playing the saxophone isn't nerdy."

"It isn't?" I asked with a note of excitement.

Apparently Carolyn didn't realized that I thought this was going to be a complement because she then added, "Yes. Saxophones are what people who can't play musical instruments play."

So, I guess that doesn't make us nerdy, just losers.

Today I took Ella to the vet because she has a UTI. While we were there, she jumped up on the table and posed behind the cutest little Norman Rockwell decoration.

Follow me

OK, I have added a new gadget to this page so that people can follow my blog. This will probably just confirm that Joey, Carolyn and Bibianna are the only people that follow my blog (and they only do so because I make them) but I am hoping that I will get some new followers. Hopefully that will encourage me to keep this blog up to date. So, look over to the right of this screen, at the top of the list and click on the link to follow this blog.

Carolyn made it home last night, or technically this morning about 1:00 a.m. Although she didn't make it to the finals for any of her interp pieces, she did make it to the semi-finals for her prose piece entitled "Yogurt Girl." The piece describes perfectly my first few years after college, working in a cubicle and learning how to survive off of the food provided (and left over) from meetings and scavenging from left overs forgotten in the communal refrigerator. I also became a regular at the dented can store, but that's a different story. Anyway, I am very proud that Carolyn made it to the semi-finals and I baked her trophy cookies anyway. (I also baked car cookies because we are planning to get her driver's license this week.)

Concho Christmas Concert and Tree Lighting

I don't know any better way to torture your children than to embarrass them in a public fashion at the city gathering designed to usher in the Christmas Season. Decked out in a Christmas sweater and Santa hat and playing with the community band. What could be better? I would not be able to pull off the task to become the worlds nerdiest mom if I could actually play the saxophone worth a hoot, but I can't. I can't play the right note at the right time under normal circumstances, but throw in nerves, cold weather and a bunch of sharps.....well, let's just say that my mission is complete. I am the nerdiest Mom. Fortunately, I am sitting beside the worlds nerdiest Dad in the band. My children are so lucky!

NO NEW MAIL

I did it! I finally did it! I cleaned out my personal inbox. I clicked on every stupid e-mail mailing list that I get because I obviously have problems with rejecting others and saying NO. But last night, I spent about 5 hours unsubscribing to everything from lands end, to travelocity, to vacation homes (what? was I planning on winning the lottery?) to home school to carinos. Then I deleted all the old e-mails, which I had a LOT, over 2000. I found e-mails from friends and family (that I never read because it is too overwhelming to think about wading through the cesspool of superfluous e-mails to find) and actually read and answered some. I have 0, yes that is right 0 e-mails in my in-box. I am so proud of myself.

Today, Carolyn is at a debate tournament in Seminole. However, she is not debating today just doing interp pieces. Her dramatic interp is from the book "Cut" and it is about a teenage girl in a hospital because she cuts herself. It is a real feel good piece. Carolyn seems to have captured the spirit of the piece and can give a heart wrenching performance of a very sad girl in a lot of pain. I am going to bake some cookies for Carolyn today in the shape of trophies because I "feel" that today is the day that she finally makes it to the final rounds and brings home a trophy.

Where have I been

Wow, I just realized after my last post that I haven't even introduced Mopsy or Ella to my viewing public. Well, we got Ella in March because we were having a problem with mice in the back yard. Joey wanted to put posion out, and I said, NO because Honey might eat it. Well, the next obvious choice was to put the cat outside, but I had already had Morocco front paws declawed (yes, animal lovers, I know that is cruel, but it seemed like the best decision at the time). Well, not wanting to send Morocco outside without claws to defend himself, the next obvious choice was to get a new "outdoor" cat. Off I go to Petsmart and adopt the sweetest little black cat with a white patch on her chest. OK, that was in March and it is November. Here is what has happened. Ella, hardly ever goes outside and although she has claws she never uses them. Morocco, who has demonstrated that he not only doesn't need claws to defend himself can also climb the trees, fence, cars, whatever. He has pretty much become our outdoor cat. Ella, on the other hand is the sweetest most mild mannered cat ever. She pretty much hides out and comes to see me a couple of times a day to be petted when things are quiet. Joey says that I will never be allowed again to go buy a pet for utility purposes. Oh yeah, and the mice...well, Honey killed one on my birthday and brought it inside for me.

OK, on to Mopsy. Well, if I had been posting like I should be, you would know that Honey has just become the best dog ever. She is "technically" Bibianna's dog and this summer, Carolyn starting shopping for dogs because she really felt that she needed one too. Well, after checking out several rescues, we found this one sweet little mixed breed (maybe Shih Tzu and Poodle, definately poodle but not sure what else). She had been rescued by the Humane Society and was almost dead. It seems that her owner was very young and just wasn't ready for the responsibility for a puppy. Mopsy had come to the animal shelter very sick and covered in grass burrs. Well, after removing a good portion of her hair and being thouroughly checked out by the vet and put on IV meds/fluids, Mopsy bounced right back. After her surgery to spay her, we brought her home on July 3. Well, she has just been the best thing ever. Honey now has a playmate, and we have a perfect 2 dog, 2 cat family.

Let me tell you a little more about Mopsy. She is now 8 months old, so we are still going through the puppy stage. Her favorite thing is to get branches from outside and bring them in my living room and shread them. Her second favorite thing is to find anything she can...ANYTHING...and take it out into the back yard and shred it. Trash, knick knacks, medicine bottles, pens, pencils, paper, tissue, my small broom, flyswatter, flashlight, etc, etc. I think that Morocco and her have teamed up to accomplish this feat. I think that Morocco knocks things off of tables, desks, shelves to the floor so that Mopsy can then play with it. I am constantly amazed at the items that I find, and subsequently have to clean up from the back yard. And, chewing on stuff isn't her only favorite past time...Oh no....she likes to also chew on cats (which explains why Ella hides out most of the time) and people, furniture, window sills and poor little Honey. Honey used to have this big beautiful pomeranian tail. Well, now it looks like a few wisps of some old wig. But it is so fun to watch those two dogs play together.

Ok, so that's Mopsy and Ella with updates on Morocco and Honey. Carolyn and Bibianna (my other children) are both blowing and going so that I usually don't know whether I am coming or going. Carolyn is on the debate team at school doing LD (Lincoln Douglas debates) and interp. She is doing so well, even though she doesn't think so, and I am so very proud of how hard she is working. She is also in choir, taking voice lessons, ballet lessons and just completed drivers ed. We just need to go get the license. Yes, that scares the heck out of me.

Bibianna started off the school year managing for the volleyball team so that she was traveling almost every weekend for the first 6 weeks of school. She is in choir and Rebel Rage, and got a part as Barrister Munchkin in the Wizard of Oz which will be performed in February, so that means rehearsals every Tuesday night with a Saturday every now and again.

So, that's it, my last 7 months in a nutshell. If anybody is still reading, I will try to update more often than 2 times a year.

Dog Days

Wow...I can't believe that I haven't posted since the day I got my new stove. Things have just been too crazy I guess. Anyway, today was a much needed day at the grooming salon for Honey and Mopsy. I snapped some pictures as soon as we got home before they went out in the back yard (to Mopsy's trash pile) to roll around, play, try to remove each others bows and get all dirty. I took the pics with my phone so the quality isn't very good, but you can still see how cute they are. Oh, and I added a pic of Morocco so he wouldn't think I am playing favorites. Would have added one of Ella, but she was no where to be found.

Cooking with electricity

I got a new stove/oven today. My grandmother bought it for me as a gift. I am so excited and it is just sad that a new stove/oven can make one person so happy. I have been cooking all day!!!
Can't you just smell the brownies baking, and the pot stickers sticking and the hot wings winging....ok....never mind....

Constant Change

Well, because life is in constant change, Joey's "mandatory" training session was canceled because not enough people were going to be there. (Figure that one out, I haven't). So, Joey and I decided that because my job was mobile, that after getting off call on Friday, we would leave for New Orleans on Saturday. I could work from his Mom and Dad's house on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and then we would just take it from there. So, that's what we did.

We left here on Saturday, and I slept most of the way (on-call hangover) to New Orleans. We left here about 7:00 AM and got to New Orleans about 10:00 PM. We took Honey with us and for her first long trip, she did fantastic. Then, on Sunday, Joey's mom had a coffee for us at 2:00 PM on Sunday. It was great. Aunt Judy, Uncle Mike, Uncle Anthony, Marilyn and the rest of us had a great after noon. (And "learned" how the date for Easter is determined!). Then I worked the next three days while Joey and the girls shopped, ate, and just had some good quality time.

On Thursday, we left for Lafayette and Lisa and Carl's BEAUTIFUL new house. Hurricanes can be rough, but the final outcome for Lisa and Carl was nice to see. They took all of us (including Staci and Steve's family) out for crawfish at a local Lafayette restaurant and it was SO FABULOUS!!!! I so miss the crawfish. Lisa also has a new teacup Yorkie (Daisy) who we all just couldn't get enough of. It was fun to watch Honey, who for the first time, was the BIG dog. Bibianna had so much fun with Madison, Collin, Bennett, Grayson, Robert and Benjamin, and Carolyn just tried to keep from being completely overwhelmed by the large group of people. ;)

Friday morning, we left for home. It was sad coming home, and I have to say that I have been kind of blue all week. It was great to see everyone but it makes me sad to leave them. Anyway, I am hoping that Lisa will be BRAVE enough to let Bibianna and I come and spend a week or so with her this summer. I am so blessed to have such a fabulous family, and I LOVE them all!

Watta latta trouble

Well, we have no water. Again! I don't think we have gone two full months this past year without water issues. Today, the city decided to dig up a water line in the middle of the road about a block away from us. So, no water. It is amazing to me just how many things we actually use water for and how often we use it. However, due to the fact that we have had issues on and off for a year now, we are getting quite accustomed to pulling out the paper goods, Clorox wipes and purell.

And, if that wasn't bad enough, we had planned to go to New Orleans next week for Spring Break. But, about two weeks ago, I discovered that my on-call schedule clashed with my vacation request; one of my team-mates graciously agreed to change with me (which meant that I would have two on-calls almost back to back after the vacation), then Joey was told that he had to attend a mandatory training class on the Tuesday of Spring Break, so we canceled our trip and one of my team-mates graciously agreed to change on-call schedule with me so that I wouldn't have to have two on-calls back to back, then Joey comes home today and says that they canceled the class because two many people were going to be gone. I don't get it. I just don't get it. So now Joey is trying to figure out how we can still get to New Orleans.

Day 5 of on-call and counting.......

Honk, Jr.

Well, shame on me for not posting in such a long time. Honk, Jr. was a smashing success and one of the best experiences of my life. Bibianna shown as Penny the Swan and all of the kids were amazing. They made the newspaper with two fantastic full page pictures, they signed autographs, they received flowers and gifts. I couldn't believe the level of responsibility and maturity that I witnessed during the 4 hectic days of performing. I had the privilege of working back stage for the last production and those kids did that musical all by themselves. I was only there to band-aid boo-boo's and help with a quick change. If these kids are our future, we are in good hands.

The week was completely hectic, exhausting, overwhelming and completely blissful. It was so much fun to watch not only Bibianna, but the whole cast get more and more comfortable as the week progressed. Every show was completely full, with at least one sell-out performance. The show received several standing ovations. Then on Monday, I went through complete depression and withdrawals. I couldn't get the songs out of my head, and it made me so sad to think that this was over. However, there is next year, and we already have the audition dates on the schedule....

Sound of Music is the next production playing at Angelo Civic Theater. Bibianna has signed up to be on the stage crew which should be an awesome learning experience and Joey has signed up to help build the set. We are hooked....that's for sure.

Solo Ensemble, Softpaws and Poor Sick Bibs!

Well, we had quite a busy weekend. Carolyn had her solo ensemble judging bright and early Saturday morning. Her voice coach graciously agreed to let her come and warm up at 7:30 on Saturday morning. I think that was a huge help for Carolyn. Carolyn sang a level 2 song, which at this grade/age level, most students are expected to only sing a level 3. She sang a French song, in French. She sang a level 2 song, in French and made a 1 rating!!! (which is the best you can do). The judge told her that she had very good posture and that her French was excellent. She said that Carolyn did an outstanding job. I am so very proud of her.

Bibianna is in the final rehearsals for Honk, Jr. and her director changed her part last week. Added more lines and made her part a little bit more dynamic. While the part/character really lets Bibianna shine, I would have been overwhelmed if I had been in her shoes and had to “relearn” my part in the ninth hour. However, since Bibianna isn’t me, she rose to the challenge. I am very proud and astounded that in about 3 days she picked up the new lines and committed (almost) to memory. In the meantime, my poor baby started throwing up last night about 8:00 and hasn’t stopped yet. She has a fever over 101 and is just sick, sick, sick. Here’s keeping our fingers crossed that she will be back on her feet tomorrow for the final dress rehearsal. That poor girl has had a tough time of it this winter. I think her immune system must be shot.

As for the kitty, we bought softpaws for him yesterday, and Joey, Bibianna and I put them on Morocco kitty. We used softpaws since Carolyn is adamant that we cannot have him declawed because it is torture for the cats. Well, if you could have seen the show yesterday afternoon, I may have to agree that it is more humane for the cat (although I am not sure Cat would agree) but definitely less humane for the humans! Oh well, we will survive. And, now sweet little kitty can’t destroy my furniture. Honey likes the soft paws when she plays with Morocco also. Puts little dog and kitty more on a level playing field.

A rose by any other name

What to name the little no-name kitty. We have struggled all week with names, made lists, voted, recounted, voted again. All under the direction of Carolyn's constant prodding that the cat must have a name. I think that we have decided on Morocco. (Actually, I think that Carolyn has decided on Morocco and she is just the loudest and meanest of us all, hence the winner of the naming contest.) Joey and I both liked "Satchmo," Louis Armstrong's nickname. Carolyn has vehemently forbidden us from calling him that, which of course makes us call him that even more. I do have to say though that the first day that I called him Morocco, he came to me and from the other room. I think that might just be his name. It is a weird one but starting to grow on me. Anyway, our goal for this weekend is to find our old Aristocats video (yes, video....I said....OLD) and see if any of the cat names in that movie seem to suit little Morocco any better.

Here are a couple of pictures of the new little sweet kitty.

Recovery and new kittie

Well, this past week has been one of the longest blurs of my life. Toward the end of last week, Bibianna came down with the flu on top of the bronchitis bug that she had. By Friday night, I had spiked a fever and I was so sick by Monday that Joey had to take me to the doctor, who informed me that I had the flu also. Bibianna, on the other hand was well enough to go to school on Monday, despite a hacking cough. The next few days for me were a feverish and achy nightmare except that I never actually went to sleep. I listened 24/7 to CNN and during feverish half-awake/half-asleep delusions I actually thought that I was running for president. Anyway, I couldn't breathe, and when I can't breathe I can't sleep. Although I knew that I wasn't actually going to die, it was awful. This morning I woke up. I woke up! And then I realized that if I was waking up, then that meant I had slept. I had SLEPT!!! Which meant that I could breathe. And, not only could I breathe, but I could talk again. Now, it isn't the carefree breathing that most of us take for granted, or the gentle lilting voice so pleasant to the ears, but it was breathing and talking, neither of which I have done in several days. I have only two words to say for next year: FLU SHOT.

After Scooter's passing last week, the four of us all realized that we could not live without a kitty in the house. So,the girls and I scoured the adoption sites and found a kitten only 5 months old that looked almost like Scooter. He was DSH (for domestic short hair) 11112640. I called the Animal Shelter, gave them the number and then listened dejectedly as they told me that little DSH 11112640 was already gone. Not easily discouraged, Bibianna and I dropped Carolyn at ballet and then stopped in PetCo to take a gander at any kittens that they had for adoption. (They always have a ton and I always have to force the girls past them for fear that we will end up with several at our house.) Bibianna and I ran into PetCo, and straight to the cages. Big sign: "We are sorry, but kitten season is over for this year." Kitten season? Is there such a thing as kitten season? Really? Well, disappointed, and a little confused, Bibianna and I headed on to PetSmart. We ran into the store and having never been there before had to search for the adoption center looking something like a cross between the Scooby Doo Gang and the Bowry Boys. Then we saw HIM! The same sweet cute Scooter like kitten that we had called the Animal Shelter about. Little DSH11112640. We ran to the front of the store like we had just discovered oil and after they let us hold the little kitty and discover that he was just too sweet, we snapped him up along with some kitten food and new kittie litter. Then off to ballet to get Carolyn we sped. The three of us brought new little no-name kittie home to meet Joey. The picture was complete.

So, this week, while I was moaning and crying about being sick, and Carolyn and Bibianna were fighting at their most feroricious level because I had no voice to tell them to stop, the new little no-name kitty and Honey laid with me to make me feel better. It took about one day for no-name to figure out that Honey wasn't going to hurt him, another day for Honey to realize that no-name has claws and isn't afraid to use them, and one more day for no-name to figure out the Honey likes to be chased. Now the two of them are the best of friends and the greatest company a grumpy old sick woman could ask for. It is fun having a "baby" in the house again, although we have had several items broken already. It is good therapy for all of us.

Farewell

With teary eye, I bring you this farewell to Scooter. I dropped him off at the vet during lunch today, thinking that they would give him a shot and call me to come pick him up. Well, it didn't happen that way. Scooter had feline leukemia and was not going to recover. So I did the only humane (cat) thing to do and had him gently put to sleep. As I put together this montage, I am overcome with how much I loved that stupid cat. I loved how he loved rolling in the dirt and coming inside covered in dust. I loved that he would leave with a collar and come home without one. I smile when I remember how many nights he came home smelling like smoke, and we had to lecture him on how smoking wasn't "cool!" We all knew that he was Carolyn's, and I am so glad that we had this mean-bad kitty in our lives to teach us the joy of cat ownership. I will miss him dearly.

Drama, drama, drama.....

This weekend, Bibianna had a day long rehearsal for her upcoming theatrical debut as Penny the Swan in Honk, Jr. I have to say that if you have nothing to do on the dates of Feb 14 to Feb 17 then you should drive, fly, or swim to San Angelo and get a ticket to be a part of this wonderful occasion. I snapped a couple of pictures at the rehearsal on Saturday, even though it probably wasn't "approved." As you can see, the kids are just adorable! Bibianna also "volunteered" me to crochet 4 little beanie type hats for the four little girl ducklings. How could I say no?

Meanwhile, since Saturday both Bibianna and Scooter (the cat) have fallen ill. Bibianna has some sort of crud (yes, I paid good money for that diagnosis) and is on Zithromax and Advair. Scooter, on the other hand, has been moping around here for the past few days and not eating. I think he has a fever, so I guess we are off to Dr. Henderson tomorrow to find out what is wrong with him.

My photos on the kodak website are still not back...trying not to stress. Off to take care of my ailing patients, crochet little beanies, and hope that Scooter is as easy to take care of tomorrow (cheap) as Bibianna was today!

Near crisis

I am so excited about my new blog space, so last night I was going to upload some more pics from my ofoto web site, where I have been keeping my pics for about 5 years. When I logged in, all my albums were GONE!!!!! After about 10 minutes of pure shock, I e-mailed customer service. Long story short, if you don't buy something from them every 12 months, they delete your pics....but not really. They told me if I uploaded and purchased even one pic within the next 7 days, they would restore all of my stuff. So, I quickly uploaded a picture of the house, and purchased it for $0.15 and my pics are supposed to be back in 5 days. Whew!!! Crisis adverted. I would have been devastated if I had lost all of my pictures. And, you are saying to yourself now...where was your backup? Good question. I will make sure I have one from now on.

Midnight in Manhattan

On Saturday night, January 12, 2008 the Cactus Hotel in San Angelo was transformed into Manhattan for the Symphony Gala, where Carolyn was presented to the city of San Angelo along with 22 other girls. Each girl was escorted by her father and then the whole group danced to "Daddy's Little Girl" which poignantly states that she isn't his little girl anymore. Enjoy!

My First Post

OMG...my friend/co-worker Monda just sent me a link to her blog on this site and I had to have one!
